12-14-07 data notes
From CEDPS
Notes from Data Group Call, 12/14/07
- Attending: Raj, John, Rob, Gaurav, Andrew, Ann, Dan G., Mike
- Discussed Rob Schuler’s slides on layered architecture for services above the modified GridFTP data node
- Agreed that layers might include (from top to bottom): (optional) persistence layer, (optional) scheduling layers, simple bulk transfer layer, and possibly others
- We agreed that this layered model, based loosely on the design of the XIO protocol stack, is a good approach; we want lightweight, stackable, optional layers
- We also discussed the ongoing work to report properties of GridFTP services
- Gaurav from OSU has a framework for doing this that we might be able to use or leverage
- John and Mike will work on an information provider that is based on Gaurav’s work
- Regarding who will eventually do the scheduling layer that looks at both the source and destination of transfers, we did not make an immediate decision; this may eventually be based on which group has available resources
- Agreed deliverables:
1) GridFTP data endpoints providing information about their properties: because of the holidays and the planned 4.2 release, this will probably be delivered in the March/April timeframe
2) Defining a client protocol interface for Rob’s proposed layered service stack; Rob will provide a first cut of this in the January timeframe for discussion by the group
3) Completed framework for the layered services stack we are discussing: plan to complete in the March/April timeframe
