Cutting the hedge needs to be done regularly to keep it neat and tidy. Using a large sharp pair of shears you can cut neat lines to give the hedge a tidy square or rectangular look. The other option is to use electric shears which makes cutting the hedge much quicker and easier.
Some people cut them into strange animal shapes or other shapes such as balls. This can look very interesting in front of or around greenhouses. However you need to be quite skilled to do this and the maintenance is higher. The cuttings can be used on the compost heap.
